Title |
Post-medieval shoe or knee buckle |
||
Description |
English: A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval sub-oval shoe or knee buckle (c. 17th century). The frame is bevelled externally. Both outer edges are rounded and peltaic, with pointed inner sides. One bears a transverse incision, possibly a pin rest, although corrosion has rendered possible decorative detail indiscernible. The incurved sides feature a central moulding, flanked by grooves and decorated with a pair of incised lines. The pin bar has been lost, although traces of orange corrosion product around the holes drilled to take the bar suggest that it was made of iron. The reverse of the buckle is flat apart from slight raised thickened ares around the pin bar holes. The frame is twisted in profile as a result of old damage. Such buckles were often tinned, although no traces of such a coating are discernible on this example. This piece has simply corroded to a red-brown colour with patches of off-white and light-green corrosion. Similar buckle frames can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 98-99). |
