Title
Post-medieval lead figurine (profile)
Description
English: Cast lead figurine of a naked man wearing only a cap, with enlarged genitalia, now damaged and not in its original position. Stylistically, the cap with a defined rim suggests that the figure is from the later Post-medieval period and could be some rough and ready representation perhaps of some figure of detestation in local society such as a rent collector or farm manager. It could even be a version of a 'shy-cock' figure to throw sticks at until it went over.

It joins a growing number of one-off figures and heads that are turning up quite widely across the country and being recorded on the database. Perhaps these figures symbolise some sort of ritual or event, like satyrs in classical times, or there is some magical significance to this group. (Geoff Egan pers comm).

A smaller figurine with a similar cap can be seen on the database from Yorkshire, record YORYM-A5EEE3, which is dated from the 18th to the 19th century.
