Title
Post-medieval coin: Reis of John V
Description
English: A gold plated lead alloy (pewter?) 4000 reis of Portugal; a contemporary copy. The official coin would likely have been struck under John V (AD 1706-1750). The quatrefoils in the arms of the reverse cross indicates that the (official) coin was struck in Lisbon, Portugal. Many of the details on the coin are illegible or indistinct, probably due to poorness of the counterfeit die. The official versions of this coin are nicknamed the 'moidore' which means 'coin of gold'. The reverse legend 'HOC SIGNO VINCES' means 'by this sign shalt thou conquer' and is a reference to the cross on the reverse.
