Title |
Post-medieval bodkin (probably) |
||
Description |
English: A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy probable bodkin of post-medieval date. The object is broadly rectangular in plan, elongated. It terminates in a broken eye formed of a sub-rectangular perforation. One side of the eye survives partially, with the other side only vestigial. Both breaks are old. Below the eye is a double transverse ridge which acts as a collar above the shaft. Below this is a slightly narrower rounded moulding. Below, the moulding is basic and unclear: removals to the sides create triangular and lozenge shapes. The shaft beyond is plain and with a flattened oval cross-section. It has been bent towards an old break towards the tip, first upwards then downwards. The object has a variable mid-green patina over a red-brown metal. Bodkins can be found illustrated in Margeson (1993, 10; fig. 4). |
