Title |
Post-medieval Toy |
||
Description |
English: A lead alloy toy gun with an iron mechanism. The gun has a curving butt and a long, cylindrical barrel. It is cast in one piece with a groove along the top edge to accommodate the iron mechanism, which protrudes either side of a central oval moulding in the side of the gun, also forming the trigger. There is a circular moulding on the top edge underneath the iron mechanism. This may be a representation of a flintlock pistol.
Ward Oles Suggests that this is a actually a 19th century pewter toy as the design overall resembles a boxlock pistol with a "percussion" method of ignition. Not the "flintlock" type that was illustrated by the author. Placing this piece at least post 1830 and after the invention of the percussion cap.
