Title |
Post-Medieval fragment of a copper-alloy bodkin |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a copper-alloy bodkin. The fragment consists of the distal terminal, which gently tapers to a curved and then slightly pointed tip. The bodkin has a width of 3.2mm and thickness of 1.2mm. Only 26.8mm of the original length survives.
3.4mm in from the end of the bodkin is an oval perforation. This perforation has a length of 2.1mm and width of 1.3mm. Below this is a solid length of 3.80mm. This zone has been decorated on one side (which for point of reference will be referred to as side A) with two dots side by side below the oval perforation. Below these dots is a shallow transverse groove. On the opposite surface (side B) this zone has an unclear mark. It is uncertain whether this mark is just a patch of corrosion or a decorative design obscured by corrosion and wear. If the mark is the remains of a decorative design it does not match the design on the opposite surface which consists of two dots and a transverse line. Underneath this zone is a rectangular perforation of 9.1mm length and 1.2mm width. The rest of the solid length of the bodkin is covered with corrosion on the edges and both sides. This corrosion obscures the clear observation of surface decoration. Side A seems to have been decorated with a transverse shallow groove set 1.0mm below the rectangular perforation. Below this groove there seems to be a pointed love heart motif with two dots below the base of the heart, one each side of the base. Side B seems to show two outward curvilinear lines, that possibly represent leaves. At the centre of the bodkin these two curvilinear lines join together just above a dot. Below the dot is a transverse shallow groove. Below the transverse groove is a lateral line down the centre of the bodkin, formed of at least two dots. The bodkin has a worn transverse break. The surviving fragment weighs 0.41g. |
