Title |
Post-Medieval Tobacco Jar Lid handle |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy probable tobacco jar lid handle. Cast ovoid or bud-shaped knop on a very short stalk rising from a biconvex base whose upper surface bears subdivisions perhaps intended to resemble leaves. A prominent mould line runs from knop to base. A collar below the base retains white powdery material, and would probably have fitted into a lid made of another different material; this might represent decay of a leaden insert to add weight to the lid to ensure the contents of the jar would be kept sealed and fresh. The knop handle is now at an eccentric angle. Abraded. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1850.
Height: 36.1mm, Diameter (at base of handle): 33.2mm, Weight: 110.28gms. |
