Summary
[edit]DescriptionPossibly the last Picture - geograph.org.uk - 1460265.jpg |
English: Possibly the last Picture, east of Salt End, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Notices posted by the Environment Agency close to the bridge - Burstwick Old Clough - say that it is due to be demolished imminently due to its poor state of repair. The bridge currently provides access over Burstwick Drain to a remote field beyond it, although heavy traffic can't cross it anyway as concrete posts have been installed on either side of its track to deliberately prevent vehicles from crossing. The bridge will be at least 100 years old and the waterway it crosses drains rainwater from the surrounding low-lying land into the nearby tidal Humber Estuary. The bridge also has second function - 'flapper' gates are installed under the bridge's arches to prevent backflow of water from the Humber returning upstream on this waterway. A newer tide backflow prevention system has very recently been installed further downstream of this, rendering this flood prevention system obsolete. This may be the last photograph of this bridge ever taken! |
