English: Portrait of William Pettigrew, 1880s. William Pettigrew erected the first steam-powered sawmill in 1852 and had timber enterprises extending north to Maryborough and Fraser Island. He was one of the first people in Queensland to recognise the need for practical silviculture and tighter government controls to ensure the sustainability of the timber industry for future generations. |
