Summary
[edit]DescriptionPortrait of Charles Tupper, Province House, Halifax (3609120805).jpg |
Charles Tupper was premier of Nova Scotia from 1864 through 1867 and led the province into Confederation. Tupper was also the only pro-Confederation MP elected from Nova Scotia to the first Canadian Parliament in 1867 - Confederation had been quite controversial in Nova Scotia, but Tupper's government had forced the vote through without first calling an election, angering many potential supporters who felt that they were denied a say. Every other Nova Scotian seat went to Joseph Howe's Anti-Confederates. After 1867, Tupper served in Parliament in a variety of roles, eventually serving briefly as Canada's sixth Prime Minister from May to July 1896. Interestingly, Tupper never faced the Commons as Prime Minister, as he did not accede to the position until after elections had been called (Tupper was out of the country when John Thompson died in office, so Mackenzie Bowell was instead named Prime Minister; Tupper was eventually invited to return to Canada and run in a by-election, with the understanding that he would become Prime Minister upon dissolution of Parliament shortly thereafter). When the Conservatives lost the election (which focused primarily on the Manitoba Schools Question), Tupper became leader of the Opposition until 1900, when the Conservatives lost again to Laurier's Liberals and Tupper lost his own Cape Breton seat. |
