English: The 13th Century Church of St. Peter and the harbour fortress at Porto Venere, Liguria, Italy, July 1976. Established by the Roman Republic in the 1st Century BC, the town later became part of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Kingdom of Lombardy (when it was subject to devastating Saracen raids), the Republic of Genoa, the Republic and later Empire of France, the Kingdom of Liguria, the Kingdom of Savoy-Sardinia, the Kingdom of Italy, the Italian Social Republic (a Nazi client state) and, finally, the Republic of Italy. |
