Trains on the Mount Shasta Route travelled from Portland to San Francisco in under two days. On the Sunset Route, it took 4 and 3/4 days for trains to reach New Orleans from San Francisco.

The New Overland Railway connecting Portland and New Orleans via the Mount Shasta Route and Sunset Route. Daily express trains having attached Pullman Palace Buffet cars, and tourist sleeping cars for second-class passengers. This trip is by all odds one of the finest in the country.
