The tramways Building was built in 1897 and has survived many catastrophes in its history, including major floods, architecturally insensitive additions and a fire. It has had some changes in use too, from premises for horse drawn trams, electric trams, buses and a period as an ice rink. It features in many of the earliest photos of the Baakens valley in PE.

From being a working bus shed and later an ice rink, the building was eventually abandoned and became derelict, a dangerous place to go, and the haunt of many vagrants. There was much outcry that the Municipality could let one of its own buildings get into such a shameful state and that this compromised their ability to enforce protection of historic buildings owned by other landowners in the city.

Fortunately after a battle to get the legalities resolved it is currently being restored by the Mandela Bay Development Agency and the future looks better. As this old commercial building is such a landmark in Port Elizabeth, it deserves National Monument status so that it can be protected from future neglect or misuse.
