English: Porcupine Fish (Diodon hystrix) Model in Indian Museum
This Porcupine fish looks similar to its relative, the balloon fish, but its body is uniformly grayish-tan, speckled evenly with black spots, with a white belly. The spines all over its body are modified scales, & when it’s threatened, it intakes water, puffing up & making the spikes stand out. It prefers living alone near reefs, caves or ledges, hunting crustaceans & molusks at night. It can grow up to 36 inches, but is usually found as an adult at around 16 inches. Because it secretes a toxin, it’s not considered a food catch, but some are caught for the aquarium trade. I saw this amazing & unique model in Indian Museum of Kolkata. And, captured the moment in my Mobile camera. Museums always teach us to explore the world. Order – Tetraodontiformes Family – Diodontidae Genus – Diodon Species – hystrix |
