English: Roman decorative mask relief with pertinent ornamented pillar from the Casa degli Amorini dorati in Pompeii, which was excavated in 1903–1905 (see pompeiisites.org). The reliefs were published (with photos) in Notizie degli scavi 1907. These (often two-sided) mask reliefs were studied by Hans-Ulrich Cain: Hans-Ulrich Cain, Chronologie, Ikonographie und Bedeutung der römischen Maskenreliefs, in: Bonner Jahrbücher, vol. 188, 1988, pp. 107–221. The present relief is no. 70 in his catalogue. |
