La Playa Vermelha o Playa Roja de Río de Janeiro es una pequeña playa localizada en el barrio de Urca, entre el morro de Urca y el morro de Babilonia. Su nombre se debe al color rojizo que adopta la arena al atardecer. A pesar de estar justo al lado de uno de los lugares más frecuentados por los turistas en Río de Janeiro, la estación de los famosos teleféricos (bondinhos) que suben al Pan de Azúcar, pocos se acercan a conocer la Playa Vermelha y son menos aún los que dedican algún tiempo a disfrutar de esta pequeña playa de aguas tranquilas, situada en un enclave natural precioso y con unas vistas que dejan sin aliento. Para quien busca tomar el sol y descansar tranquilamente fuera del frenético ir y venir de las playas más famosas de la ciudad esta es la playa perfecta. Lo primero que sorprende al llegar a la playa es la estatua de un Chopin pensativo que parece contemplar el Pan de Azúcar, como imaginando cuáles serían los acordes más precisos para describir semejante belleza natural. Si el músico hubiera tenido la oportunidad de verlo en persona, con seguridad le habría compuesto una sinfonía. Otro de los encantos de Playa Vermelha es que desde aquí parte un precioso sendero asfaltado de 2 kilómetros de largo, que discurre por el contorno del Morro de Urca, llamado Pista Claudio Coutinho, en homenaje al que fuera entrenador de la selección brasileña de fútbol durante la década de 1970. El sendero es plano y por tanto muy fácil de recorrer, está rodeado de frondosa vegetación a través de la que se pueden ver las olas rompiendo en las rocas y en él es común encontrarse con familias enteras de pequeños monos tití alimentándose entre los árboles.
