Description |
English: No. 6, Captain George Franklin Atkinson, a view of 'Mutineers surprised by Her Majesty's 9th Lancers', 1857, from the book 'The Campaign in India, 1857-8', published 1859.
During the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers earned the nickname 'the Delhi Spearmen', a name which is believed to have been given to them by the mutineers themselves. They took part in the Siege of Delhi and the Relief of Lucknow. The lancers are shown surrounding a rebel ox cart crossing a culvert. |
