Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Pirate's plaque Bartholomew Roberts left the village to go to sea and became renowned as Black Bart, one of the most rapacious pirates ever. He captured and plundered over 400 ships, showing no mercy to their crews or (often) their slave cargoes, nevertheless he was reputed to keep a tight rein on his own men, forbidding strong drink, gambling and loose morals on board ship. He was killed in a sea battle with a designated pirate-catcher and thrown overboard off the coast of Africa. Most of his crew was hanged.
