This is a working, coal-burning steam locomotive that was formerly used to head tourist trains at the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine in Ashland, Pennsylvania, USA. The engine, nicknamed "Henry Clay", is a narrow-gauge 0-4-0T built by Vulcan Iron Works. The photo was taken in fall 2000. Unlike most coal-burning steam locomotives, this engine utilizes anthracite coal as a fuel source. Pioneer Tunnel consists of an old surface mine plus an inactive subsurface mine - both are accessible to tourists. This mining area targeted anthracite coal, a very low grade metamorphic rock that consists of more than 90% carbon. It is black-colored, lightweight, not sooty, and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. Anthracite is harder and heavier than ordinary sedimentary coal (= lignite coal, sub-bituminous coal, and bituminous coal). It is also cleaner-burning and hotter-burning.
