Description

The Pinwheel Galaxy, a.k.a. Messier 101 or NGC 5457, a face-on spiral galaxy about 27 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. For this image, the DSS red channel was mapped as red, and the DSS blue channel was mapped as cyan. North is to the left, and the field of view is approximately 43x43 arcminutes.

This image was taken from astronomical plates made available to the public through the Digitized Sky Survey.
