Summary
[edit]DescriptionPillar Hypocaust, Chedworth Roman Villa - geograph.org.uk - 154265.jpg |
English: Pillar Hypocaust, Chedworth Roman Villa. There are two kinds of hypocaust (or underfloor heating) at Chedworth. In this kind (Pillar) the pillars would have supported large slabs of stone. These slabs would then have been covered in plaster or a kind of cement, and finally perhaps would have had a mosaic finish (Cf. 154259). This Pillar Hypocaust is the more effective variety as it allows the heat to reach every part of the room. (Cf. Channel hypocaust 154271) |
