Description
The triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Two-sided painting, that used to be a shutter of a large Passion retable, now dismanteled. Other panels from this retable are now in Trier, Berlin, Cape Town and Lisbon. On the reverse is a painting of Saint Trudo, which links the retable to Sint-Truiden Abbey.

. ‘Dit paneel, dat in zeer gave toestand verkeert, vertoont de kenmerken van het onder de eerste Italiaanse invloeden staande Zuidnederlands maniërisme. Door wijlen Dr. M. J. Friedländer werd het toegeschreven aan Pieter Coecke van Aelst. Ons wil het voorkomen dat de oorsprong veeleer gezocht dient te worden in de kring van de Luikenaar Lambert Lombard, waarbij een vergelijking met de panelen van het altaar der St.-Denis zich opdringt (Luik, kerk van St.-Denis, ibid., Museum). Wellicht kan de thans overschilderde achterkant van het door ons verworven paneel t.z.t. dit probleem oplossen. Daar kan men thans reeds vaag de figuur van een H. monnik onderscheiden met een kerkmodel in de hand. Is dit laatste te identificeren, dan wordt het wellicht mogelijk de herkomst van het paneel vast te stellen’.
