who has evernoted the construction of an iron bridge. You will therefore need four of the six-teen-foot spars and twelve of the up-right posts. In each deck there shouldbe six ties of a size and strength uniformwith the uprights, though in addition tothis, there should be the additional braceof light ribs, preferably one foot apart. These ribs may consist of willow wands, such as basket-makers use, and whichhave naturally a very slight arch, orlight wooden sticks may be steamed andslightly curved, then being dried in thisposition. The spars, uprightsand ties may be made of bamboo, thoughthis is not very reliable, and it is muchbetter to use well seasoned spruce, witha straight grain. It is also best to havethem fish-shaped, so that they may offeras little resistance to the air as possible. Having thus completed the frame-work, except for the tail, which will bereferred to directly, you are ready toturn your attention to the completion ofthe wings by supplying the covering.Japanese silk is excellent for this pur-pose, being fairly strong and exception-ally light, but it is also rather expensivefor the beginner. I would suggest, therefore, a light but strong muslin, which should be attached to the under-side of the ribs, rather than over them. This can be done by tacking thoroughlyto each rib by m
