1907/08 vom Zoologen Ernst Haeckel begründetes Museum zur Phylogenese (=stammesgeschichtliche Entwicklung der Gesamtheit aller Lebewesen). Grundsteinlegung 1907; am 30.7.1908 schenkt Haeckel das von Carl Dittmar entworfene und aus Stiftungsgeldern finanzierte Gebäude der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena anlässlich ihres 350-jährigen Bestehens. Heute ist das Museum Teil des Institutes für Spezielle Zoologie und Evolutionsbiologie der Universität Jena. Es beherbergt umfangreiche zoologisch-paläontologische Sammlungen mit über 500.000 Stücken. Die Sammlungsgeschichte geht bis in das 18. Jahrhundert zurück.
