external wound cicatrized, and his general health rapidly amended.Unfortunately, firm anchylosis took place between the scapula and upperextremity of the humerus, and the muscles of the shoulder wasted fromdisuse. The patient was transferred to hospital at Madison, Indiana, onMarch 11, 1864, and was discharged from service April 22, 1864. InSeptember, 1868, this pensioner went to New York, and was providedwith an apparatus by Dr. E. D. Hudson, who reported that the shorteningof the arm was about half an inch, the motions of the forearm and handwere normal, that the muscles of the shoulder were much atrophied, andthat the only motion of the shoulder was the limited movements permittedby the scapula following the humerus. Dr. Hudson was of the opinionthat the apparatus which he applied mechanically aided muscular actionto a satisfactory degree. Photographed at the Army Medical Museum. He was admitted to the U. S. General Hospital, at Beverly, New Jersey, on August 22, 1864. On September 12th, the thigh was amputated at the lower third.
