Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Early Christian mosaic of a phoenix (actually an African Crowned Crane, Balearica sp.). 4c AD, in the Archaeological Museum of Aquileia. The same bird can be seen on 5-6c Byzantine mosaics in Petra Church (Jordan), although without the fiery symbolism that is added here. The African crane was known to the Romans from early imperial times; it eventually became identified with Christ because of its rayed crown, and with the phoenix because of Christ's resurrection.
