Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Cabinet-card portrait of brain-injury survivor Phineas P. Gage (1823–1860), shown holding the tamping iron which injured him. From the Gage family of Texas photo collection. An identical image is in the possession of Phyllis Gage Hartley of New Jersey. Because a daguerreotype is almost always laterally (left-right) reversed, a second, compensating reversal has been applied to produce this image, so as to show Gage as he appeared in life; that this shows Gage correctly is confirmed by contemporaneous medical reports describing his injuries, as well as from the injuries visible in Gage's skull, still preserved.
Date Date of underlying work no later than 1860.
Source Photoreproduction (ca. 1890) of daguerreotype or similar early-process portrait.
Author Author of underlying work unknown.
