Nederlands: K.P.C. de Bazel. Uitbreiding Philipsdorp, Eindhoven, 1916-1918. Collectie NAi, BAZE 623
English: K.P.C. de Bazel. Expansion Philipsdorp, Eindhoven, 1916-1918. NAI Collection, BAZE 623
In 1909 the Philips Lightbulb Factory decided to build a residential district for its workers, with a connection to a proper sewer system as well as to mains gas and drinking water. Philipsdorp – ‘Philips Village’ – was based on the garden city concept and was meant to provide the workers with a counterbalance to the industrial environment where they spent the working day. The expansion of Philipsdorp to a design by De Bazel is therefore rustic in character. Instead of row upon row of more or less identical little houses, Philipsdorp consisted of short strips with private cul-de-sacs and vistas that were designed as a unified whole. Plenty of attention was devoted to the detailing of layout and the architecture, so that the public space has an intimate and safe feel. |
