as Venezuela. Primarily, the effort has been to set forth in theforegoing pages the social medium of the Philip-pine Islands to-day, rather than to describe thedetails of Filipino life. In this rough sketch ofthe underlying causes and conditions in Philippinesociety, innumerable little charms of the countryand graces of the people, those below as well asthose above, have failed of adequate mention.They are things, over and above the disagreeablefeatures of the present situation, which make thesympathetic sojourner feel kindly disposed towardthe Filipinos and optimistic regarding theirfuture. In large part, they are things whichmust continue to escape the brush of the artist orthe pen of the writer. This brief survey of themain movements of Philippine life will have bestserved a purpose if it shall tend to check too hastygeneralisations from insignificant or insufficientdata, and to prevent dogmatisms about theFilipinos either in an extremely favourable orextremely unfavourable sense.
