The Lavender Waxbill (Lagonosticta carrnlcscens) isknown to dealers as the Gray-blue Finch. The sexes aresimilar, the color being a soft gray, with black tail, abdomenand facial band. The upper tail coverts and the two middletail feathers are red. This lovely little bird has almost asbad a reputation as the Fire Finch for delicacy, but onceacclimatized it lives fairly well. The Strawberry Finch or Avadavate (Sporccgin-tJius ainandava) is found in India and Cochin-China. It isan exceedingly common bird in the market and is deservedlypopular. The male is orange-red, with wings and tail black.The wing coverts and underparts are spotted with white.The female is brown above and pale bufif below, with simi-lar white spots. The Orange-cheeked Wax bill (SporccginfJiiis mcl-podus) has been introduced into Porto Rico, where it isfound in some numbers. It is brownish-gray above and palegray below. The cheeks are orange, and a small space infront of the eye and also the upper tail coverts are crimson.The female is slightly smaller and duller than the male.This species is not so hardy as some, but lives well underproper conditions. The Golden-breasted or Zebra Waxbill (Sporccgin-thus subflaziis)is one of the smallest of the group. The maleis brownish above, with the underparts yellow, with a tingeof orange on the breast. The flanks are gray with whitebars, and a stripe through the eye and also the beak arescarlet. The female is smaller and much less brightlycolored.
