Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Petrified elephant on Wolfhole Crag, Bowland Looking in a northerly direction from this remote and lonely wild place of Wolfhole Crag, one can make acquaintance with 'Nellie' the petrified elephant. No doubt a victim of a spell cast by witches who venture from Pendle seen on the south horizon ! You can just see the top of Wolfhole Crag trig point above 'Nellie' back. Note the small water pool she drinks from! There was a pin-striped suited gentleman complete with bowler hat, who appeared on the summit. He seemed rather agitated, shouting out "Where's my train? Have I missed it?" I told him he was way off the mark up here in the wilds of 'Bolland' ('Bolland' being the ancient spelling of the modern 'Bowland') for any train station! I told him "Sit thee down lad and be calm and have a hot cuppa from my flask and a bite to eat from my baggin." I insisted he was most welcome because he was a brother in need. He wavered on my nod as I held out tripe n onion sandwiches! But he drank the tea with heartfelt thanks (bless him). He then stood, eagerly rejected my offer of a sandwich again and said he had a country to put to rights. I told him bluntly there's not much hope of that if he thought the train station was here at Wolfhole Crag! He looked offended at my remark, stuck his brolly into the ground and ran off leaving it as a lonely symbol of his odd presence at such a remote place. I could hear him shouting as he ran west towards the setting sun, saying the people needed him and that it was vital he catch his train! I shouted out after him that between here and Lancaster there was some very rough and high boggy moors that even the 'Hound of the Baskervilles' steers clear of! Furthermore I shouted there was no way he would catch his train in Lancaster, especially in those brogues he was wearing because they had to many ornamental perforations in them! So folks, if you see his brolly at Wolfhole Crag leave it there, you never know the stressed out civil servant may return for it and who knows even want to catch a train!
