glad to havesomething to eat with Big Bill and his companions, and asfor blaming them for handling him so roughly, he couldnever think of doing that, because he knew it must beimportant to have such good guards in Toyville to protectthe city from the wicked ruffians of Grumbletown. The two Buccaneers expected Big Bill would give th(Messenger a good drubbing for speaking that way, bulthough their captain looked a little glum, he did no morethan order them to build a camp fire and prepare a gooddinner. After eating a hearty meal, the Messenger thankedBig Bill for the entertainment and again took up his journeydown the road to Toyville. Big Bill and one of his men set out to find a good placefor the ambush, the other Buccaneer was left behind atthe gate to watch for the expected visitors so he couldwarn Big Bill of their approach. His laughing was thesound that Helen and Tommy heard when Mr. Poodleexpressed the hope that his little Messenger had not beencaptured by bandits. m m w m * 38
