Summary

[edit]
Description The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts building at Broad and Cherry Streets in the Center City area of Philadelphia was built from 1872-1876 and was designed by Frank Furness and George Hewitt in a combination of historical styles. It was restored in 1976, and is a National Historic Landmark. (Source: Philadelphia Architecture: A Guide to the City) This image shows the Cherry Street walkway between the original (Furness-Hewitt) building (right) and the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building (left), a former Federal building and automobile factory purchased by the museum in 2002 and opened in 2006. In the walkway are two installations; in the foreground is the Grumman Greenhouse by Jordan Griska, made from a Grumman S2F aircraft, and, in the background, Claes Oldenburg's Paint Torch (2011). Across the street is the Broad Street entrance to the Philadelphia Convention Center (2011).
