Title
Penannular brooch
Description
English: Copper alloy Romano-British pennanular brooch with pin missing. This brooch is formed from one one length of undecorated metal, curled around in a 'C' shape. It has a diameter of 40.04mm, is 2.01mm thick and weighs 5.31g. The terminals of the brooch are formed by the metal being spirally coiled back from the main ring, and on the same plane as the ring, i.e not twisted away at an angle. Originally the two terminals would have been much closer together, but the ring has been widened into the afore mentioned 'C' shape. The brooch has an even dark green patina. Pennaular brooches are of a simple design that spanned many centuries. This type came into fashion in the 1st century B.C. and continued in use into the Roman period. See Fowler, 1960, Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society, page 149-177.
