Português: Pelourinho do Funchal. Anterior projeto de Rui Carita e Virgílio Gomes, execução da oficina de mestre Baleira, Pero Pinheiro, Calcário de Molianos, 1989. Em 1486, o duque D. Manuel, futuro rei e filho da infanta D. Beatriz, enviou um pelourinho para a vila do Funchal, em madeira, que foi instalado nesta praça. Entretanto, tendo o Duque mandado levantar os paços do Concelho no seu antigo terreiro, para lá da ribeira de Santa Luzia, prontos em 1489, mandou transferir o pelourinho para o novo local. No entanto, os moradores já se tinham habituado ao pelourinho nesta praça, pelo que, embora D. Manuel insistisse várias vezes na deslocação, “ainda que nisso se faça algum gasto“, o pelourinho ficou e foi passado a pedra vulcânica local, mas semelhante ao calcário-brecha da Arrábida. Com as alterações da instalação do Liberalismo, o pelourinho do Funchal foi demolido em 1834. Em 1989 toda a área foi sujeita a completa remodelação, voltando-se a instalar ali o pelourinho do Funchal, em réplica de calcário de Molianos, e restaurou-se o passo de procissão da praça. Como restavam dois pequenos fragmentos do pelourinho, que se pensavam em calcário-brecha da Arrábida, material hoje dificilmente disponível, com base nos fragmentos e num desenho efetuado poucos meses antes da sua demolição, procedeu-se aos trabalhos de remontagem. |
