Summary
[edit]DescriptionPeebles, Scotland (48753285767).jpg |
A pleasant town set on the banks of the River Tweed in Southern Scotland. We are looking along the High Street towards the Old Parish Church, built in the mid-1800s in a Gothic style. By far the most famous person to come from here was John Buchan, who wrote several well-known books, including "The 39 steps". He became a politician and was appointed the Governor General of Canada and served from 1935 until his death in 1940. The pink granite monument on the left commemorates another local person, Professor John Veitch, a philosopher and poet who was Professor of Logic at the University of St Andrews 1860-64. |
