Summary
[edit]DescriptionPeace sign New Walk York 02.jpg |
English: A peace sign on the left bank of the River Ouse in York, adjacent to Skeldergate Bridge and New Walk.
The peace sign accompanied the planting of an oak tree, an extension of a project '7000 Oaks' started in 1982 by German artist Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) and the Free International University in Kassel, Germany, as part of the seventh Documenta, an international art event. The idea was to plant seven thousand trees within the limits of the town and next to each tree was placed a marker stone, a naturally formed basalt stele. It was intended to extend the project worldwide and a tree planting took place on Wednesday 3rd February 2010 at New Walk by Skeldergate Bridge. There are two stones, one is a basalt stele brought from Germany, the other is local limestone. It bears the relief of a sun disc and a hare as a peace sign. |
