Description iconographique:

Le tableau présente une vaste perspective ponctuée d'architectures (dont le tombeau circulaire à droite, inspiré du mausolée de Cecila Metella sur la via Appia) et de personnages, conformément aux règles du paysage composé. Les montagnes évoquent les Alpes. L'embarcation vers laquelle se dirige un couple rappelle la barque de Charon qui dans la mythologie gréco-romaine reçoit les âmes des morts et leur fait traverser le fleuve Achéron. Commentaire historique:
