Summary

[edit]
Description

As I left Costa on New Street in Burton upon Trent I saw these pavement reliefs.

They were by Christopher Campbell made in 1998.

This seating area features an arrangement of decorative golden bronze tiles recessed into the pavement. In front of the curved benches, a round abstract relief forms the central feature, surrounding this is a arrangement of square cobbles interspersed with small square tiles each with a small relief. On the edges of the arrangement are several asymmetrical tiles depicting fern-like plant forms, this theme is continued where the pavement meets the road with a series of bollards culminating in a semi-circular ball finial with a low relief plant form.
After the adoption of the Public Art Development Plan in 1997 the Council identified the proposed redevelopment of New Street as an opportunity to utilize public art as a means of improving the quality of the built environment in this area. The bronze plaques set into the pavement slabs were part of this scheme. Chris Campbell worked with local primary schoolchildren on the design of the plaques. The children created collages inspired by the heritage of Burton upon Trent and, in particular, New Street. These were then printed and cast in bronze by the artist. Chris Campbell also designed street furniture for New Street, including bollards, seating and planters.
