Description
English: See https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/local-news/photographer-ed-gold-captures-stunning-2056565 Dervel Finlay Davies, Drofa Dulog, Gaiman, Chubut, Patagonia. Dervel was 62 years old at the time this photograph was taken. This was his uncle's farm. He was known as Tom Beulah after the Welsh village his grandparents came from. Dervel's grandparents, David Finch Davies and Rachel Finch Davies, sailed to Patagonia in 1885 on the Velero Vesta, and finished building this house in 1889. You can see their photograph on the mantelpiece. Dervel lived in this house all his life apart from a year spent doing national service in the army in Comodoro Rivadavia in the far south of Argentina. He lived here with his parents and grandmother, and many brothers and sisters, who eventually left. His mother passed away 24 years ago. Dervel lives all the time in this one room in the house, and uses an old kerosene lantern to eat by at night. The buckets in the picture hold maize, which he soaks in water to feed to his pigs. He relies on water from the canal in the summer, and when it's emptied at the beginning of winter, he uses a well. He has no electricity, no gas, no telephone, no car and no bicycle. He walks the 17 kilometres into Gaiman once a month to buy provisions, which takes him three hours each way. He told me that he loves to look at the stars at night when walking, and can only afford the equivalent of £20 worth of food a month. So he spends that on maize for his pigs and mate (yerba) tea and sugar for himself, and he finds a lot of his food in the surrounding countryside around his farm.
