Title
English: Pat Kanim, Snoqualmie chief, ca. 1855
Description
English:

Pat Kanim, or Patkanim, was the chief of the Snoqualmie people. In the 1840s, he was unfriendly to the white settlers who were starting to come into the Pacific Northwest. After a trip to San Francisco, he decided that fighting incoming settlers would be disastrous for his people. He kept friendly relations with settlers in the Seattle area and helped fight off hostile tribes. Photographer George N. Moore may have printed this portrait of Pat Kanim in the 1880s. It seems to have been copied from a tintype, possibly taken in the 1850s.

Original photograph: 185-?. Copied after 1870 by George N. Moore.
