Summary
[edit]DescriptionPasture at Easter Newton - geograph.org.uk - 1049923.jpg |
English: Pasture at Easter Newton. The Ochil Hills are on the skyline to the north, and the long red mound in the middle distance is one of the remaining shale bings of West Lothian, the left-overs of the world's first oil recovery industry. Oil shales were mined and heated to allow the oil to be driven off and collected. The spent shale was dumped, but has since been used as a base for roads, aggregate etc. The Five Sisters at West Calder are a preserved example 167065. |
