Title |
Papal bulla |
||
Description |
English: Medieval papal bulla of Urban VI (1378-89), in moderate condition. A lead bull or seal was used to authenticate a papal document or bull. The bulla is in poor general condition having much corrosion of the lead on the obverse face which has caused the surface to degrade, although the lettering URB/ANU_/_VI can be made out reasonably easily. The reverse side is, by contrast, in quite good condition and the head of St Peter in particular is very clear, as is the central cross that divides the two pelleted aureoles containing SS Peter and Paul. The bulla has become slightly bent and the obverse has begun to split. The corrosion is such that it appears to be bubbling from the surface, meaning cleaning would probably not reveal the inscription any more clearly.
The reverse is quite crisp in places but no die flaws can be observed. The reverse is sealed at 5 degrees to the obverse. This is the fifth bulla of Urban VI to have been recorded from the Diocese of Norwich. |
