En 1718, la Compañía de Jesús realizó las gestiones para la construcción del seminario de la orden y, a su costado, la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto. En 1767, tras la expulsión de los miembros de la Compañía de Jesús del país, la Comandancia de las Provincias Internas decidió que parte del colegio se convirtiera en Real Hospital Militar. En 1811 varios cuartos del hospital fueron prisión de algunos de los caudillos insurgentes, entre ellos de Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, iniciador de movimiento de independencia. En 1885, José Cordero, rico comerciante de Chihuahua, compró el edificio, y al poco tiempo lo vendió al Estado de Chihuahua. Uno de los espacios que ocupaba la plaza del ex colegio fue arrendado al gobierno federal para construir y establecer la Casa de Moneda. Tras la demolición de la Casa de Moneda se inauguró en ese mismo lugar en 1910 el Palacio Federal, edificio porfiriano construido con motivo de las festividades del centenario de la Independencia Nacional. Una de las torres de la iglesia que resistió el paso del tiempo se conserva dentro del soberbio edificio como huella de un pasado lejano que ha desafiado el tiempo y es ahora recuerdo de la prisión del Padre de la Patria. El Palacio Federal funcionó como oficina de correos por un largo periodo, siendo posteriormente restaurado e inaugurado el 17 de noviembre del 2007 para funcionar como un espacio orientado hacia la conservación y difusión del patrimonio chihuahuense.
