Description A sua origem histórica é de 8 de setembro de 1612, quando os franceses, comandados por Daniel de La Touche, Senhor de La Ravardiere, sob a proteção da rainha regente da França, Maria de Médicis, estabeleceram entre os estuários do rio Anil e Bacanga na ilha de Upaon – Açu, a colônia que batizaram de França Equinocial, iniciando a construção de um forte, ao qual deram o nome de São Luís, em homenagem ao Rei de França. Atualmente sede política e institucional do Governo do Estado do Maranhão.
