Summary
[edit]DescriptionPair-pull-part mitosis and meiosis.png |
English: The cell division processes mitosis and meiosis are easier to understand when their shared strategy is considered. For each division the chromosomes to be separated are first paired and tied together (by loops of cohesin proteins and, for Meiosis I, by crossovers). The paired elements are then pulled on by fibers coming from both ends of the cell. Finally the cohesins are cut, releasing the paired chromosomes so they can be parted and pulled into the two new cells. Two animations also available here, The Facts of Life Mitosis and The Facts of Life Meiosis, show these processes in action. |
