English: Paddington Underground Station (Hammersmith & City and Circle Lines), 6 April 2023.
The station was opened in 1863 by the Metropolitan Railway as Paddington (Bishop’s Road), one of the two termini (the other being Farringdon) of the first underground railway in the world. The MR was supported by the main line Great Western Railway and the MR station was built immediately adjacent to the west end of the GWR’s Paddington terminus. Indeed, the track was laid to the GWR’s 7’0” gauge and initially the GWR worked all the services (by steam locos). The MR’s line was eventually extended to Moorgate (1865) and Aldgate (1876) in the City of London. Later in 1863 the track was laid with mixed gauge and the MR worked their own trains over the route. In 1864 the MR and GWR supported the Metropolitan Hammersmith Railway – later retitled the Hammersmith & City Railway – to extend the line south westwards to Hammersmith, again initially worked by GWR broad gauge trains (from Farringdon) but in 1867 the H&CR was bought jointly by the MR and GWR when the former took over the working of the train services from the latter. Eventually, H&CR services were extended eastwards to Aldgate/Aldgate East and beyond). The H&CR never had its own rolling stock. Although legally the H&CR remained an independent company until the formation of the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933, it was shown on Underground maps as part of the Metropolitan Railway/Line until 1990, when it regained its identity as the Hammersmith & City Line. From 2009 the Circle Line also began operating services to the former Bishop Road station and on to Hammersmith. It should be noted that the Bishop’s Road station is completely separate from the former MR’s Paddington (Praed Street) station, now served by the Circle and District Lines and the Bakerloo Line tube station beneath, although all three stations have been named Paddington since 1947. There is nothing left of the original Bishop’s Road station, it having been altered several times and completely rebuilt in 2012-13. Pictured is the narrow island platform with the main line Paddington termini beyond. |
