regon Power Com-pany, and the balance from Delta to ShastaSubstation was constructed by Pacific Ser-vice. It is of interest to note the distance thispower is transmitted from its point of gen-eration at Copco No. 2 to the load centersat Oakland and San Francisco. FromCopco No. 2 to Shasta is approximately 120miles. The distance over the 220,000 voltlines from Shasta to Vaca-Dixon is 142miles and from Vaca-Dixon to ClaremontSubstation in Oakland over the 110,000volt lines, approximatelv 47 miles,—a totalof 309 miles. Some of this power is also distributed inSan Francisco through Martin Substationover the 70 miles of 110,000 volt lines fromClaremont to Martin via Newark, makinga total transmission distance from CopcoNo. 2 to Martin Station of 380 miles. The present electrical installation atShasta Substation is of the simplest pos-sible character. There is a single oil cir-cuit breaker and the necessary meteringequipment on the incoming 110,000 voltline from Copco No. 2. The line then

A. transformers(one unit is a spare) where the voltageis raised to 220,000. From the high voltage side of the trans-formers the line goes to two 220,000 voltoil circuit breakers through which it maybe switched on to either of the Pit-Vacalines. All of the 110,000 and 220,000 voltswitch and bus structures are of the stan-dard type developed by the company andused elsewhere on the system. At present, the substation building is ofsomewhat odd proportions, but its designmay be better understood if some of thefactors entering the problem are men-tioned. Its only function now is to housethe main switchboard, transformer coolingwater circulating pumps and other auxiliarystation equipment, and to provide facilitiesfor handling a main transformer unit incase repairs are necessary. The great heightof the building is occasioned by the factthat the main transformers are
