In the first place, the automatic sprinklersystem is most valuable in stopping fires before much damage is done to otherthan the contents of the building, and fresh water causes less damage from thissource than does salt water. The automatic sprinklers frequently become oper-ative before the alarm of fire is given, in which case the salt water system wouldnot give an effective pressure nor enough water until after the alarm had beensounded.
