-Photo by Justin Miles, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife- Pacific Giant Salamander (Dicamptodon tenebrosus) Pacific giant salamanders are the largest salamanders in Oregon. Terrestrial adults are marbled with tan and brown on their tops and are mostly tan on their undersides. They can grow to a total length of 13 inches. Terrestrial adult Pacific giant salamanders live in cool, moist coniferous forests near cold and clear streams. Because terrestrial adults spend most of their adulthood in burrows, they are rarely seen. Occasionally, during times of heavy rain, adults leave their burrows to forage on the forest floor at night. |
